Cycles can be very valuable. Unfortunately they are all too easy to steal, and they can be easily damaged in the event of an accident (as can the rider; and perhaps innocent third parties too).
ETA (Environmental Transport Association) was formed by environmentalist Andew Davis back in 1990 with the aim of encouraging more people to travel in an environmentally friendly way. They were the first people in Britain to offer a nationwide breakdown service for cyclists and they even offered weather reports and travel advice for those planning long journeys. They are still very active in promoting cleaner ways of transport and since 2007 they have topped the Good Shopping Guide's award for the most ethical insurance company. You can not only insure your bicycle (or e-bike of up to 250 watts) but they also have a 24 hours a day rescue cover. If you take up this option and break down or have a puncture they will not repair your bike but will transport it, and you, to a safe place, whether this is a repair shop, a transport hub like a railway station, or your home if it is closer.
Cycle Guard are part of Thistle Insurance Services who were set up way back in 1938. For over 20 years their Guardcover policies have been providing specialised cover for not only cycles but also music, photography and pet care. They are part of the PIB group since 2016; this is a broker operating from about 40 offices with a variety of specialised insurance products that it provides to over 1000 brokers in the UK. PIB in turn have the backing of private equity firms The Carlyle Group and Apax Funds so they are well capitalised. Cycleguard will accept applications to insure road, racing, folding and mountain bikes, as well as some e-bikes and those adapted for disabled cyclists.
Yellow Jersey is a fairly new venture set up by Plan Insurance Brokers, one of the top hundred brokers in the UK with around £30 million in premiums; and yet they are still family owned. They have been in business for over 40 years and not only provide standard insurance for cyclists and cycle dealers, but also home insurance for cyclists. This policy (underwritten by AXA) combines both bike and home insurance, with consequent savings. Yellow Jersy offer three levels of cover; Essentials, for the usual risks of vandalism, theft or accidental damage, aimed at day-to-day cyclists; Performance, which also provides public liability cover for the more enthusiastic cyclist who may enter rallies or club rides, or go on continental cycling holidays; and Ultimate, for those who compete regularly in the UK or abroad.
Sundays Bike Insurance was set up by a group of enthusiastic cyclists 13 years ago. They will cover off-road gravel bikes, road bikes and BMXs, and their policies can cover not only public liability cover but (rather limited) personal accident cover too. They partner with Strava, who have created an app for cyclists and runners based on GPS technology, and they have donated containerloads of cycles to third world countries. Their insurance is organised through Gator Bikesure, which is again run by cycling fanatics and which also runs Chain Reaction Cycles, which claims to be the biggest online cycle store in the world, as well as some of the the biggest cycle insurers in America and Australia.
Velosure are part of Lawshield UK Ltd, who are coverholders at Lloyds, which was first incorporated in 1997, and they themselves are part of the Connexus Group, which was set up in 2017. They claim that their cycle policy offers more than their major competitors; not only theft and accidental damage but personal accident, public liability, cycle hire if your own is damaged, cycle rescue, up to 90 days worldwide cover and cover for competition use. They will insure electric bikes (including the battery; which can cost more than the bike itself), single bikes, and multiple bikes; this offers special rates for those who own more than one, including triathlon bikes, mountain bikes and hybrids.
