we know that musical instruments are expensive to replace if lost, damaged or stolen but musicians and musical companies have other potential liabilities too, particularly when performing in public. Electrical equipment can cause shocks or fires, people can trip over microphone leads, large speakers can fall or blow over causing injuries, to name just a few potential compensation claims.
MusicGuard is a trading name of Thistle Insurance Services Limited, which is owned by the PIB Group. This was launched in 2015 to bring together highly specialised insurance brokers under one roof and they are financed by private equity firms Apax Partners and the Carlyle Group. MusicGuard offers policies to protect music providers such as teachers, performers, DJs etc by providing public liability insurance whilst performing as well as covering their instruments and equipment against theft or accidental damage. Loss of earnings or hire costs incurred because of an insured event can be covered and up to 30 days worldwide indemnity (extendable to up to 365 days) can be arranged. Instruments and gear stored in a vehicle can also be insured subject to certain precautions.
Musicians Insurance Services is owned by the Bryan James Group, a family owned brokerage with around 36 employees which first became a limited company in 1983. Apart from covering individual musicians and their equipment they can also insure brass bands, choirs, clubs, discos and even sports grounds and other leisure premises. They can work with people organising social activities from birthday celebrations to firework displays. Cover is arranged through major insurers Aviva and Allianz.
Ampband is an organisation for UK singers, musicians and bands. They are not for the top earning performers though; they cater for those earning less than £85,000 a year. Membership includes public liability and legal defence insurance. This does not include insurance for instruments or anything else but this can be provided by Hencilla Canworth, who are brokers specialising in arranging cover for members of the performing arts, at a claimed discounted rate. They can put potential clients in touch with performers, and provide sample contractual forms and a copyright registration service.
Insure4Music is a trading style of Ripe Insurance Services Limited. They don't just cover musicians but was initially set up in 2002 to insure golfers, and they have since expanded into insuring other leisure activities such as extreme sports, sports and fitness coaching, and photography, and they will cover boats, caravans and even drones. Their turnover in the year ending December 2020 was over £18 million. Their musician insurance has several levels of cover for singers, music teachers, bands, orchestras, DJs etc, for both instruments (and their accessories, such as cases or amps) as well as public liability indemnity. Performance cover can be arranged to cover loss of earnings if a gig has to be cancelled because of an insured event.
There are about 30,000 members of the Musician's Union ranging from part time music teachers to full time professionals. There are a range of insurance benefits available through specialist entertainment industry brokers Hencilla, some included within the membership fee and some optional extras. Members may have to register to benefit from some of them and there are limitations on the included cover which may be entendable for a premium. The type of cover available includes cover for product liability, personal accident, professional indemnity, instruments and equipment, and even tax investigation. There are of course other benefits of membership for musicians and musical companies such as legal advice, post-motor accident care, contract advisory, help with unpaid fees and many others.
