Couriers are people who carry other people's light goods in exchange for payment. They vary from fast food deliverers on mopeds right up to van drivers delivering furniture or household goods. Many of these people are self employed and unfortunately a lot have inadequate insurance. Many people think that a normal car or van insurance policy covers them if they deliver light goods in it, but it doesn't. As an absolute minimum they should have business class vehicle insurance. Personal liability, and goods in transit insurance should also be considered, depending upon the type of goods delivered. Some insurers stipulate a single point of delivery, others will cover multiple deliveries.
What is or is not covered varies from one insurer to another so care needs to be taken in picking the right package.
Refusedcarinsurance.com is a website that specialises in difficult to find vehicle insurance, and this includes a class of insurance called 'Hire And Reward Insurance. This is insurance for motorists who drive vehicles carrying goods or people, and who receive payment for it, and policies can cover all kinds of deliveries from small parcels up to the heaviest loads. Drivers can apply for quotes from multiple specialist insurers via their website.
Insurance giant AXA can provide courier van insurance. This is to cover a van for any type of light deliveries, from leaflet distributors and mail order goods upwards. Delivery drivers should also look at their business insurance page to get public liability insurance and cover for the goods that are being carried. They can provide quotes online but only subject to certain criteria, for example only permanent UK residents, aged between 25 and 75 can get cover in this way. If you are in doubt that you qualify you can ring them; the number is currently 0330 159 1521.
Acorn Insurance first began life as a broker back in 1982 and has since specialised in niche insurance products, such as courier insurance. They are a growing company, which during the year ending December 2019 turned over more than £50 million, about 30% more than the year before. They are a subsidiary of Granite Holdings One Limited and the group (including Acorn) turned over more than £84 million. So, they are not minnows! They can provide courier car and van insurance, plus optional goods in transit, employee liability and public liability cover. Legal expenses are standard with their basic courier van insurance policy.
Milestone Insurance Consultants are long established commercial insurance brokers (they have been around for over 40 years) with offices in Sheffield, Glasgow and Leeds. They can help couriers travelling within the UK and Europe, and will accept applications from those aged 18 and over. They can even consider policies for any driver aged over 21. As usual they offer personal and public liability cover, as well as the all-important goods in transit insurance; and larger companies can get quotes for covering their entire fleet. Drivers who have already had experience as couriers may be eligible for discounts.
Tradex work closely with Clegg Gifford & Co Limited (the same people own shares in both companies) which started 1968 as an insurance broker and then as a broker at Lloyds. This meant that clients of Tradex, which had a relationship with over 800 brokers, could handle a wide range of insurance products. Because of this Tradex can not only offer fast food delivery insurance to people delivering takeaway food, but they can also cover them for making their deliveries on motorcycles or mopeds, as well as cars and vans. Also, unlike most insurers who refuse to cover people with criminal convictions, Tradex will accept applications from them.
